History of Eastern Kentucky University and EKU Football: The history of EKU also called the Bluegrass region, is an interesting one. Located in southwestern Ohio at the junction of Tennessee and Kentucky, it’s a relatively new university, founded in 1883 by William C. Fradkin as part of Knox College. Today, its mascot and team name are Kent State. In 1876, the school was chartered in 1863 as Western Illinois Normally but moved to Cincinnati that same year, where it would later become known more formally as Southern Methodist Normally. The city of Eku is approximately nine miles northwest of downtown Cleveland.
History of EKU
In addition to being named by the townspeople at least ten times between 1870-1893, Eku has been the site of many different industrial cities throughout this time. As such, it has a very rich history. From mining coal and lumber to farming cotton, Eku was often home to important companies like Wells Fargo, General Electric, and U.S Steel. These mines were eventually located in northern parts of the state but had their headquarters nearby.
Many workers from around then came to work for these companies. Some in those factories worked in both Cleveland and Cincinnati, as well as some other towns along the line and nearby railroad tracks. Others worked in the Detroit area. More than forty years after it was founded, Eku remains a busy community with lots of traffic, a vibrant urban center, and high population density.
The major employers of today are Microsoft and IBM. Other leading industries include automotive. In addition, businesses around Lake Erie have sprung up recently. This is also reflected in the fact that over fifty percent of all residents live within three miles or less of the campus.
Divisions of Eastern Kentucky University
The university itself is roughly divided into two sections. One section is mostly residential, while the second is the main business. A majority of students are white, although there are small numbers of immigrants who come into the region. It is one of the first American universities to offer courses about international relations and world history. Students have not only completed classes on global issues but have also developed careers in technology, research, law, and teaching. Their studies can be taught remotely and students study independently from the student body of Eku.
Most of the professors are internationally renowned and are well-known scholars in their fields. However, they are generally considered to be relatively unenthusiastic compared to university administrators. They have also been accused of sexual harassment, according to reports of former employees as early as 1994.
Eastern Kentucky University and EKU Football
The EKU Football team, which plays in Division IV of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, began in 1991. Currently, the number of members is 11. However, due to recent layoffs and COVID-19 cases, Eku had to cancel spring training games early this year. During the season, players traveled to various countries all through Europe in order to prepare for the tournaments. There have been many memorable moments on the field. For example, during the 2002 World Cup, a player walked off a sideline with blood pouring down his leg in full view.
Another moment occurred during an away game in 2001 when players walked off the pitch in protest against a racist nickname given to them by referees. To honor those affected, several fans in attendance walked out without paying a single dollar to cheer. They did it in solidarity with people protesting racism. Some fans even brought with them a truck and drove to the stadium so that they could pay the bills. People from other regions and even across the country have visited and enjoyed watching the game.
Recently, college crowds have become increasingly involved in supporting clubs and teams. Several local schools have played regular exhibition contests at the arena. At an average of four games per week, there have been over 100 spectators per game.
